  CHAPTER ONE

  Samara

WHAT A FUCKING IDIOT! Why would a hunter go after four wolves by himself? Samara slapped the man, trying to wake him up, but he didn’t move. She read a report of a hunter being knocked out in the same area almost nine months ago. Where are we finding these fucking hunters? Frustration bloomed in her chest when she crossed the packed car lot, and yet no had joined them. The scent of oil and antifreeze filled her nose as she wrapped her arms under his heavy-ass body a few inches into a parking space.

She sighed heavily debating whether to leave him or not. Part of her wanted to just walk away but then his eyes snapped open.

“Golden girl, Samara.” His eyes fluttered closed and his breathing evened out. Well, fuck me sideways! She pulled him toward her pickup and more anger raged through her chest. If she had stayed away, she wouldn’t have to worry about her parents. Now he could tell them she left him. After a few minutes, her shoulders ached, and her knees grew stiff. Samara grunted as she heaved the unconscious man into her truck. Fucking idiot should’ve been trained better. The fucker was lucky the older wolf only knocked him out. Samara checked her surroundings again, making sure no other werewolves watched her before climbing into the passenger seat. She didn’t want to be caught outside if the wolves returned with back up. At least in there, she could turn on the truck and drive away.

From the time she learned to walk, her parents started training her to become a top hunter of the supernatural. Dragons, werewolves, and the occasional witch were on normal hit lists. Hers, however, were entire packs or clans and deep down, she loathed her job. Her parents were the leaders of the Devil Hunters and she wanted to make them proud on her second official solo mission. She didn’t know if being a hunter was truly in her blood and this mission would be her last.

She hadn’t killed a single soul but since her parents were the leaders, they pushed her through the ranks with ease. She really searched for love, and it seemed like too much to ask for in her position. Samara pinched the man’s nose blocking his airway. After a few seconds without air, he gasped, then his eyes snapped open.

“Easy, boy. You hurt me my parents will have your head on a fucking pike.”

“So, I saw right. The golden girl’s in Denver.” The man’s eyes bounced over her body. Bile filled her mouth as she glared at the man. She instantly regretted putting him in her truck. A stupid mistake I need to correct quickly!

“Fuck off. What the hell were you thinking, taking on four wolves at the same time?” She had no clue why someone would be so stupid.

“I had assumed the women were human, not fucking wolves.” He shook his head.

“Which makes you an even bigger idiot. Most wolves, after they complete the bond, change their mates so they can handle childbirth. Don’t you know anything?” Samara didn’t understand how he even passed the test to become a hunter.

“Oh, I’ve come across a few males who hadn’t changed the woman.” He smirked. Samara sneered and punched him in the gut, he bowed over for a moment.

“Be careful from now on. Get out. I have to follow them before they get too far.” Samara motioned for the guy to get out, but he didn’t move.

“You need my help if you’re going after them.” He pointed toward the road. Samara resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

“I’m faster and smarter than you. I think I can handle myself.” Samara sneered but the bastard still didn’t get out of her truck. She grabbed a knife from one of her many hiding spots and pointed it at his leg. “Get out.” Samara gritted her teeth. She didn’t need nor want his help.

“Damn, girl, if you’re going to point a
weapon at least buy me a drink.” He winked before jumping out. She slammed her foot onto the gas pedal and left the parking lot. When she glanced in her rear-view mirror, the asshat waved at her. What a fucking idiot!

She had planned on spending the night in Denver, but she didn’t want to be near the guy. He was a trouble magnet. Samara shook out her shoulders and tried to focus on driving out of town. From the scattered intel on the packs, she needed to head for Nevada. Yet there were one hundred and eight cities in the large freaking state.

After some long deliberation, she made the choice to leave the Devil Hunters after this mission no matter what happened. She had saved money and secretly purchased a car, rental place, and phone. All were ready to go in southern California. She was already on the west coast and it would be easy to get a bus ticket from Las Vegas to Los Angeles then get her car. The plan was set and with some luck, she would have a job in a month. She knew how to hide in plain sight from all her training, only this time she would be hiding from her parents. Her phone buzzed, and the caller ID came across her car’s screen. She jammed her finger into the button on her wheel.

“Hello, Dad.” Her quiet father rarely called her.

“Actually, sweetheart, it’s Mom. My phone died, and I needed to let you know some good news.” Her chipper voice rang through the speakers in her pickup.

“Okay. What’s up?” Part of her hoped they would have her race home for some much-needed love and affection. Samara gave herself a mental shake. Her dream of seeing love in her parents’ gaze would probably never happen.

“We were able to get into the wolfbase.” The excitement came across the speakers loud and clear. For a full two years, the Devil Hunter leaders had been trying to hack the wolfbase- a wolf database of all the wolves and where their packs were located. There were rumors that the witch covens and even bears might be on the list, but it was mostly speculation running through the upper ranks.

“How were you able to get in?” Samara scanned the horizon then picked up speed. When she hit nine mph over the limit, she set the cruise control.

“A change in leadership happened in a small pack, they made a deal with us. We don’t touch their pack in exchange for the login information.” Mom giggled. Samara’s stomach tightened at the giddiness in her mother’s voice. She knew that sound too well, some kind of supernatural cleansing happened. The thought of someone losing their life because they were born with an animal inside them didn’t feel right. Yet she kept her opinions to herself for her own survival. Soon she hoped to be free of them, but deep down she knew her parents would shift the earth on its head looking for her. So, hiding might not be as easy but needed all the same.

“You didn’t...” Samara glanced at the screen expecting to see her mother’s face for some odd reason. Her mouth dried up as she returned her gaze to the road.

“Oh, the pack was so weak and easy to take out.” Mom laughed again. Samara’s stomach flipped. She may have been trained to kill the werewolves to give the earth back to humans but to kill them off always seemed so freaking extreme. Samara was excellent at faking disgust toward the wolves but not one wolf had shown outward malice toward her when they thought she didn’t pose a threat to their existence. At a young age, she learned not to question her parents and the scars on her hand started to heal. The moonlight glinted on one very deep cut on her right hand just below her knuckles. A firm reminder to keep quiet.

“You know, by doing that, another pack won’t ever talk to us again.” Samara thought she had a good point till her mother’s fit of giggles stopped in an instant. Crap, I said the wrong thing!

“They’re vile beings and shouldn’t even be here. They’re freaks of nature and should be exterminated.” Her words were filled with anger and disgust. Sleep deprivation crept into her bones as she scrambled to figure out how to make her mother happy again. Most parents wouldn’t be happy their children became murders and yet here I am, off to find another pack for them to slaughter. Her mouth dried at the thought.

“I know the motto, Mother, but we could have squeezed more information from the pack before ending them.” Samara tried to turn her mother’s mood back to happy or even pensive instead of angry. Her parents had never been known for being lenient. Only the death of supernatural beings made her parents smile. Growing up, every positive thing Samara had done seemed to be the expected result. But if she had fucked up, all hell broke free.

“You might have a point, Samara, but the deed is done.” Shuffling sounded on her mother’s end and she took the opportunity to check her surroundings again.

“Okay.” Samara let go of a small sigh. She hoped her mother moved out of the anger stage and into calm.

“You need to head right for Austin, Nevada. There’s a wolf pack there. They are growing their forces and your father is worried they will attack us soon.”

  “I’ll head that way now.”

“Remember, this is a stealth mission. Only kill if you have to,” she reminded Samara once more but she didn’t need the reminder. If she spoke the truth with her mother, she would tell her killing wasn’t an option. She’d rather give up information to live and vanish the next day to her hideaway.

“Understood, Mother.” Samara clicked the button. The woman who had birthed her had never been one to be sentimental about saying goodbye. A small town came into view and she hoped they had a room available in a clean hotel. Her eyes grew heavier since she didn’t have someone to talk to. She turned up her music and sang along to keep herself awake. She had been ready to check in before the fucktard messed up everything. Samara pulled up to a smaller hotel than the one in Denver, her muscles ached from dragging the guy.

After paying, she grabbed her bag with her laptop to do research on Austin, Nevada once she settled in. When she opened the door, the cream sheets called her name, but the stained walls made her wince. She did a quick sweep of the room before falling into bed with her computer next to her.

She really wanted to find someone to love her, unlike her family. To find a man who wanted her for more than what he could gain from her parents being the leader of the Devil Hunters. Douglas came to her mind, but she pushed the thought away. He was a good example of a guy trying to use her to get ahead.

Something inside her hated the family she had been born into, but she didn’t want to cry over things she couldn’t control. All she could hope for was to find true love when she made her escape from the Devil Hunters.

  CHAPTER TWO

  Devin

“OH, THANK GOODNESS you’re here. I need you at the front desk for a few hours.” Devin’s boss, Lisa, grabbed his hand and dragged him into the motel lobby full of guests waiting to be helped. A small line had formed with new guests for the only motel within the city limits of Austin, Nevada. Middlegate and Gabbs, south of them, had two motels each but Austin couldn’t sustain more than one.

“Where is Tony?” Devin looked over at Lisa, her gray hair puffed out from her naturally curly hair. In the last week, Devin had to cover for the ass multiple times and his patience started to wear thin. He rolled his shoulder while the memory of his morning shift filled his mind. As a wolf witch, his wolf didn’t fill his mind until he made the choice to change.

“The little brat isn’t answering and if he doesn’t show before I get back, he won’t have a job.” She shook her head; the news didn’t surprise Devin one freaking bit. “Can you cover? I need to go get my grand-baby from school and take her to the doctor. School just called and said she has a fever.” Lisa sighed as her hair bounced around her face covering her brown eyes.

“I’ve got it. Go take care of her.” Devin strolled toward the desk where their laundry woman was speaking too loudly to an elderly man. “What’s going on?” Devin stepped in with ease and fixed the problem with the older couple and then checked in two other matches. After the line disappeared, Devin pulled out a bottle of water from the mini fridge under the counter.

This morning had been like every other day since
he gained his new wolf hidden silently beneath the surface. He rolled into a shift and walked around his empty home. With six nieces and nephews running around, he yearned for a family even more. Hell, even his stubborn brother found his mate.

The doors whooshed open and in came a woman with long blonde hair. Wide hips filled her jean shorts well. Devin blinked a few times trying not to stare as she sashayed into the lobby. Oh, she’s fucking gorgeous. His fingers itched to touch her soft looking hair, but he kept still behind the counter. He swallowed hard trying to think of what to say as his cock twitched against his boxers.

“Good afternoon,” Devin managed to spit out as her sky-blue gaze met his. He cursed himself for looking like a fucking idiot in front of the attractive blonde.

“Hello. I’d like to see if you have a room still available.” Her smooth voice spoke to something primal inside Devin. Even without his wolf at the surface like most wolves, he had a feeling he would like her.

“Let me check.” He typed on the computer and found one room left. “Looks like you’re in luck. You’ll get the last room available.”

“Wonderful.” She pulled out her wallet and handed over a black card. What on earth does she do for a living to afford a black card? He took it, along with her ID, and noticed the first name on the card didn’t match the ID but the last name did. Samara, such a pretty name.

“Is Klaus your spouse?” Devin asked not really wanting to know the answer. She laughed so hard, she struggled to breathe. Devin raised his gaze to meet hers.

“Oh, goodness no. He’s my father. My own mother thinks I won’t ever be marriage material.” She shook her head then sighed.

“Why is that?” he asked while typing in the information. Every once in a while, he glanced up to get a good look at Samara.

“I’m not old-fashioned like her. I believe marriage to be a partnership not a union of two people who tolerate each other.” Samara’s nose scrunched up. He let go of a chuckle at her mother’s idea of marriage.
