CHAPTER ONE
Angie
ANGER COURSED THROUGH Angie’s small body as her mother pulled her toward the car by her arm.
“Why are you doing this mother?” Angie bit back the envy rolling in her gut.
“I’m protecting you, now stop fighting and get into the car.” Missy yanked on her arm while Aiden waved goodbye.
“This is my home. I belong with my twin.” Angie pleaded.
“Unlike you, your brother can shift. We just need to hide you until your wolf comes out.” Mother’s words stung deep into Angie’s soul.
Angie managed to slip out of her mom’s grasp and bolted toward her brother. He pulled her into a tight hug and she held onto him with everything she had.
“Please, don’t let them take me away.” Angie begged him for the hundredth time in the last few days.
“I love you, Angie.” Aiden kissed her head and her mother’s hands wrapped around her arm once more. The pain in her twin’s voice broke her heart. This was all his friend’s fault.
“Please,” Angie pleaded. If Derrick the future alpha didn’t make the damn joke, I wouldn’t be here! Her mother pulled her close so her mouth stopped near Angie’s ear.
“I’ll pick your ass up and toss you in the car if you don’t start walking,” Missy whispered. Angie gritted her teeth and slowly moved toward the car, her eyes still on her brother. She wanted to stomp her foot and tell her mother off. Austin, Nevada was her home, she would be safer here than on the road.
Missy shoved her into the back seat and closed the door. Angie didn’t become a legal adult for three years but if she had been a real werewolf, she wouldn’t be in this mad predicament of running off to keep her secret hidden in plain sight. Her human father patted her leg in an attempt to reassure her they were doing the right thing. Missy climbed into the front seat and they were off. Parents were supposed to love their kids, not treat them like freaks they needed to hide. They would stop in Colorado as her dad had found a place without a werewolf pack. Missy feared if others knew Angie couldn’t shift, then they would try to experiment on her. The anger Angie bore for her mother might last forever. Angie considered herself a freak of nature, the ability to heal a little faster than a normal human but slower than her brother, sensitive hearing but still not as good as her twin’s.
“Buckle up, Angie,” Missy instructed. Angie jammed the buckle into its place as she turned to look back at her brother’s fading image.
“This isn’t right, Mom. We should stay.” Angie had been pleading with her mother and father to not move. Their alpha would be content to keep their secret but Missy wasn’t convinced of Derrick’s loyalty if the current alpha passed away.
“Give it a rest,” Missy snapped. Angie glared at her mother. Derrick’s comment still rang out in her head. Maybe you should go see a doctor about your inability to shift. Oh, maybe a scientist can help. This one comment from the future alpha of Austin freaked Missy out so bad she started packing their stuff that night. If other people knew Angie couldn’t shift, hunters or scientists would come after her and experiment on her.
Now she would be on the road, bouncing from town to town trying desperately to find a place to lie low with no alpha to turn her in.
Damn it all to the seventh hell!
Angie sat in the back seat and folded her arms. Soon, she would find a mate and have a family of her own. She promised herself she would never treat her pups like this. No matter if they could shift or not, Angie would keep her family together.
One day, I will get away.
CHAPTER TWO
Hector
**Fourteen years later**
HECTOR TOOK A DEEP breath of the cold air to help clear his mind. He broke the news to Pepper, and she just laughed hysterically before stopping when she met his gaze.
“You’re not joking, are you?” Pepper placed her hands on her lovely hips. One of her plucked eyebrows was raised. Pepper had managed the impossible, to this day she held the record of keeping Hector tied down and it had only lasted two weeks. They had bonded over the shared pain of never knowing their fathers, but he couldn’t stay with Pepper any longer.
“No, Pepper. It’s been fun and all but it’s time for us to be moving on.” His wolf shook his head before going back to sleep in his mind which only drove Hector to frustration. Pepper’s skinny human body was hot, but she had been growing too attached for her own good. She had hoped they might suddenly imprint but Hector had been happy when they didn’t. Every female Hector took to his bed thought they would imprint after sex. Were females really so stupid? The imprint happened when a match touched for the first time. There were no exceptions to the rule. And to be perfectly honest, Hector didn’t want a mate. He only slept with women to help placate his wolf for a short time and he didn’t favor blue balls.
“But we were having such a good time these last two weeks. I thought I grew on you.” Pepper’s eyes were sad while she clenched her fists at her sides. His wolf woke up and laughed at the idea of having a long-term relationship with anyone but their elusive mate. I’m never going to have a mate. Hector reminded his wolf making him sulk again.
“They were good times, but we both need to move on Pepper. It’s not healthy for a werewolf to be tied down to someone who isn’t their mate.” Hector gave her the usual bullshit he gave all the other human females. When Hector took female werewolves to bed, they understood the rules from the beginning. Humans on the other hand didn’t understand the connection between a werewolf and the wolf living inside them.
“You’re such an ass,” Pepper hissed. She grabbed h
er bag off the floor, shoved her thick coat on and stormed out of Hector’s home. She had tried to surprise him with sex but his wolf had been sulking so badly, it had made it impossible for Hector to get freaking hard. He shook his head as he heard Pepper’s car engine roar to life and move away from the house.
Images of his mother’s face came flooding back again. Hector’s father had died shortly after Hector turned a year old. His mother never told him what happened and his pack mates were told never to tell him. With all the drugs coursing through her system, he was surprised she had remembered her own name.
Hector growled low as he kicked the couch, it groaned and moved a quarter inch to the side. When Hector turned two, their home became a fucking drug house with men rotating through to keep his mother busy. Hector grabbed his coat and walked out the door and climbed into his truck.
Ash waved from his walkway. The two lived next to each other as most of the pack lived close for protection. With the heavy snow fall he couldn’t go for a swim at the lake, but Zac would let him use the hotel pool. His wolf liked to go for runs with Ash but only if he was in the mood to run, which didn’t happen after a break up. This is all your fault after all. You keep pining away for a mate who will never come.
Swimming would help clear his thoughts since he didn’t need to shift to work off the excess energy. When Hector pulled into the flow of traffic toward the airport hotel strip, memories flooded back into his mind. His mother had dropped him off at Drake’s house and said she needed someone to take care of her child. Drake’s mom agreed to take him in and Hector gained four siblings. Drake and Ash became the brothers Hector never had. Every few months she had stopped by to check on him, then disappeared again. Each time only brought back the pain of being abandoned.
Zac’s hotel came into view and he pulled into the parking lot. Hector grabbed his bag and walked through the thickening storm. Blizzards in fucking March weren’t out of the ordinary in Colorado but still a pain in the ass.
“Hey buddy, what brings you in today?” Zac eased out from behind the front counter leaving Temperance there alone to tend to the short line of guests.
“I’m in need of a swim but with the snow it’s hard to go to the lake.”
“Yea, the report said another five to ten inches are coming tonight.” Zac shook his head. The weather guys only managed to get their reports correct half the time, so Hector didn’t hold his breath on the extra snow.
“Did the airport close down?” Hector took in the busy lobby and Zac nodded.
“I heard something about the cross wind or something like that. The snow plows probably can’t keep up with it.” Zac stopped talking when a female walked up to him to ask a question before sauntering away. Normally it caught Hector’s attention but not this time.
“There is a closed room where some drunk guy punched a hole in the wall. So, you can change there.” He motioned to the stairs and they strolled up together to the second floor.
“Where is Johnny?”
“I think the lucky bastard found his mate last night.” Zac chuckled as he led the way to the room. “He sent me a text saying, ‘mated, in heat, sorry.’ I didn’t think the kid was old enough for a mate yet.”
His wolf growled with frustration hearing how another pack member had found their true mate. Hector shook his head to calm his beast down.
“He turned eighteen a few months ago, right?” Hector worked to keep his wolf from coming out and tearing the hotel apart.
“Sounds right.” Zac slid the key into the door and they walked in, the noise levels dropped down. “So, what happened to Pepper?”
“She left this morning.” Hector shrugged and his wolf nodded firmly.
“She left or did you kick her to the curb?” Zac smirked and shook his head. Hector had no desire to explain himself. He never kept women long. His wolf wanted a mate and Hector didn’t.
“She is gone, that’s all that matters.” Hector spotted the huge whole in the wall Johnny needed to repair later. Zac grabbed his shoulder and turned him.
“We both know your wolf is behind this and you need to stop thinking with your dick.” Zac pointed toward Hector’s crotch and then shook his head. His buddy may be right but Hector wouldn’t give his ego a boost and admit it.
“Oh, like you’re any better.” Hector threw back. He knew Zac had his best interests in mind but Hector didn’t need it. When his mother died of a heroin overdose a little over ten years ago, right before his eighteenth birthday, most of his friends had treated him with kid gloves, but not Zac. Her death was no loss. Good riddance. “I’m going for a swim. Are you coming in or not?”
“Can’t, there’s a rush coming in as the last of the flights get canceled but I’ll meet you after for lunch.” Zac strutted out leaving, Hector to his thoughts again.
I’m not fucking mate material anyway, Hector reminded his wolf before changing into his swim trunks. His wolf simply shook his head again. After a nice long swim Pepper would be out of his mind for good and he would be on to his next conquest.
“I only have sex with women. I won’t mate with them.” Hector spoke out loud so his wolf could hear him clearly. His wolf only rolled his eyes.
I wonder if any of Zac’s guests might be up for a one nighter. The idea kept his wolf at bay. Of course, a little touch from a female wouldn’t change the fact that women left him. Every day he would remind his wolf of that fact until they died.
CHAPTER THREE
Angie
“HAPPY TWENTY-EIGHTH birthday Aiden.” Angie spoke through the phone while looking around her new surroundings. Another year had passed since she saw her twin and her plan had been to see him for their birthday. Yet the lovely storm put a hole in her plans.
“Happy birthday little sister.” Aiden chuckled back. I’m only a few minutes younger you brat.
“Are you ready for my visit? I can’t wait to see your twins.” Angie held her phone tight. The photos of the twins were just not enough anymore. Angie needed to see them in person.
“They’re excited to see you too.” Aiden paused and moved the phone. Angie heard her niece and nephew giggling on the other end of the line. Carmen, Aiden’s mate made a funny noise and the little ones giggled more.
“Oh Alia had her kiddo as well so she’ll have lots of babies to play with.” Carmen chimed in.
“My flight should leave tomorrow but with this storm, I’m not sure. I’ll keep you up to date.” Angie didn’t care for the fresh white powder, it kept her from her brother but she wanted to make the most of Denver.
“Be safe.” Aiden said his goodbye, the kids needed their nap. Angie grabbed her bag and kept her purse tight to her side. She had been to numerous large cities but being alone for the first time weighed on her nerves more than she’d admit to her mother. Angie had been stumbling ever since she left the damn plane. Her mind wandered back to the argument with her mother before her flight into Denver. The layover was only meant to be a few hours but a snow storm hit harder than the airlines had expected and the damn cross wind made it too dangerous to leave by air. Angie adjusted her hair and walked outside into the storm. A shiver ran down her spine as the wind hit her face full force. March seemed to be a little late to have this kind of weather, but she’d been reassured that it was normal to have later cold fronts. Some even hit in May which completely boggled Angie’s mind. Part of the elevation here in Denver.
She pulled out her note about the complementary hotel and found the correct shuttle to take her to where she would be staying for the night. A part of her wished she had been a full-blooded wolf like her brother, then this storm wouldn’t bug her so damn much. She tightened her coat around her and sat. A deep need to go for a run surged through her body and she made a promise to do so once she settled into her room. The need to run happened in spurts and almost always before her bloody moon week. The hotel came into view and she followed the rest out of the shuttle to check in.
After setting her bag down in her room, Angie chan
ged into warmer clothes for her run in the snow. A few times she had tried to work off excess energy in a gym but every time her body felt more worked up after. The confined space made her skin crawl for some reason. Her mother said it was her lost wolf screaming to get out. Angie always grew angry when her own mother made her feel like a broken wolf.
Moving from one town to the next, never making friends for more than a month or two and being home-schooled most of her life, she had no idea what normal was. Her romance books were her only long-term friends and after her run she planned on picking up where she’d left off reading last night. Her kindle was full to the brim with romance novels. Everything from indie authors, to crazy rich authors filled the space.
Angie descended via the steps instead of using the elevator to get her heartbeat up before she moved to the cold temperature outside. When she reached the last step a pair of dark brown eyes caught her attention.
Her mouth turned dry.
Her eyes moved down a strong muscular body.
A gold chain hung around his neck and a stud glinted in the light poking out of his left eyebrow. His whole body radiated experience and bad werewolf. Her mother’s voice filled her mind, telling her to keep her ass moving, but for some reason her legs wanted to carry her straight to him. In her mother’s eyes, being near other wolves might expose her secret, yet she couldn’t move her feet. His shirtless body dripped with water, he shoved his hand through his short dark hair and kept his eyes on hers. A part of her wanted to lick him dry. Wait, what?
“How is the water?” Angie asked. Seriously, you're asking about the fucking water? A smile lit up his face, mischief sparkled in his eyes.
“Perfect.” His rugged voice sent heat through her body. "What’s your name?"
“Angie. Yours?” She licked her lips and his eyes followed her tongue before snapping back to meet her gaze again. He’d be an interesting birthday present to unwrap. Wait, seriously what is wrong with me? She’d never experienced such a pull to a wolf or human for that matter.
